Chemical peel for healthy and radiant skin
A chemical peel is a medical technique used to treat skin ageing (wrinkles) and sun damage. It’s also applied for excessive pigmentation and mild acne scars.
Results of a chemical peel
A peel can affect different depths of the skin, determined by varying concentrations of different substances. The use of different liquids consecutively can also influence the depth of the peel. A superficial peel causes light flaking and has a limited effect. Willeke Kamphof offers a more potent variant of the chemical peel, known as a medium-depth peel. This type stimulates skin exfoliation and significantly improves skin texture.
Recently, a client told me that he had undergone this treatment several times with a beautician but had noticed no effect whatsoever. Well, of course. The products I work with as a dermatologist are naturally of a different calibre than those used by a beautician. If you’re looking for a substantial boost for your skin, aiming for a more even complexion and finer pores, I would definitely recommend a peel.
How does a chemical peel work?
Before the peel, we first degrease your skin with alcohol and acetone. Then, a substance is applied to the skin to allow the peel to penetrate deeper. This often causes a mild burning sensation. Next, the peeling solution is applied to the skin using cotton swabs. Multiple layers are applied until an even white discolouration occurs, known as frosting. This may cause a significant burning sensation, which is alleviated using a fan. The treatment takes about 20 minutes.
After the treatment
After the peel, we cool the skin with wet gauze. We then apply a special cream associated with the peel. Once absorbed, the burning sensation quickly subsides. After treatment, the skin may feel warm. Over the next few days, the skin will peel significantly, with recovery taking approximately 7 to 10 days. It’s crucial to use sunscreen for 2-4 weeks after treatment to promote an even skin tone. The skin may feel tight, peel heavily, and sometimes itch in the days following treatment.
How many treatments do you need?
The frequency of peels depends on your starting point and personal preferences. Usually, 1 to 2 treatments are sufficient. Many maintain their skin in good condition by repeating the treatment annually, preferably in the autumn and winter months. For pigment irregularities or acne scars, multiple peels may be necessary. There should be at least a 2-month interval between successive peels.
