PRP treatment for hair loss

Hair loss is a common and highly distressing issue that is not always easy to resolve. Androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss, which can occur in both men and women) is the most common cause of hair loss. Treating it can be quite challenging. Prescription lotions and medications do not work for everyone and are not suitable for everyone. For a detailed description of various types of hair loss, please see other sections on our website. This page provides all the information about PRP treatment for hair loss.

PRP treatment for hair growth stimulation

In recent years, PRP has increasingly been used for hair loss, both in men and women. PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, which is blood plasma rich in platelets. PRP has long been used in dentistry, orthopaedics, and veterinary medicine to promote healing processes. Using this body-derived blood plasma is a relatively new technology within (aesthetic) dermatology. The blood plasma contains substances (growth factors) that stimulate hair follicle recovery, increase blood supply to the hair follicle area, and promote the growth of hair follicle cells.

Scientific research on PRP’s effectiveness

A great deal of scientific research has been conducted on the effect of PRP on androgenetic alopecia. The results are positive! Most treated patients experience a halt or reduction in hair loss and an increase in hair density and thickness. The effect of PRP on alopecia areata and telogen effluvium is less extensively studied, but there are already positive indications.

How does the PRP treatment for hair loss work?

Before the treatment, blood is drawn at our clinic. The blood is then centrifuged, leaving behind blood plasma with a high concentration of growth factors. This plasma is injected into the treatment area and applied to the scalp using microneedling.

Who is PRP treatment suitable for?

PRP treatment is most beneficial for men and women diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and possibly alopecia areata (Dr. Willeke Kamphof has extensive experience with this) where the symptoms have not lasted more than 2 years. PRP treatment is particularly suitable for those who prefer to be treated with body-derived or natural materials. As it is autologous, allergic reactions are virtually excluded, making it a safe treatment for almost everyone.

When is PRP not recommended?

Before treatment, a thorough discussion about the client’s health is conducted. If there has been a history of skin cancer or if there is an active skin disease or infection in the treatment area, this treatment is not suitable. PRP is also not appropriate for individuals with chronic blood disorders, clotting issues, or liver disease. The use of blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and painkillers like ibuprofen, Voltaren, Diclofenac, etc., is a contraindication. Please consult with your treating physician.

How often should you undergo treatment?

After the PRP treatment, the growth factors from the platelets begin to work, a process that continues for 4-8 weeks. It is recommended to undergo 3 treatments, each spaced 4-6 weeks apart. To maintain the effect, a single treatment every quarter or six months may be done thereafter. Unfortunately, a single treatment is not effective.
