Neck tightening and rejuvenation

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, leading to wrinkles and folds. While your face may still look radiant, the skin on your neck often reveals your true age. Until recently, surgery was the only effective solution to this issue. Today, however, there are a variety of products and devices available that can tighten and firm the skin.

Multiple times a day, I’m asked to advise on treatments to improve the skin of the neck. The skin here is often thin, with little underlying fat or supportive tissue. Even at a relatively young age, you might begin to notice some sagging and, in some cases, lines.

Neck care routine

Ideally, you should treat your neck daily in the same way you treat your face. Cleanse, apply a serum with a high concentration of antioxidants (such as Professional-C serum by Obagi Medical or CE Ferulic by SkinCeuticals), and then follow with a moisturising cream with a high SPF. Summer and winter alike. Before bed, you might consider using a cream containing retinoids. Start gradually, as it can easily irritate the neck area. The most effective retinoid derivatives are prescription-only, but there are also excellent cosmeceuticals available, such as those from Obagi and SkinCeuticals.

Neck tightening treatments – what are the options?

1

BBL Forever Young

If the signs of ageing are still mild, the BBL Forever Young treatment can help maintain a youthful appearance. This innovative procedure rejuvenates the skin at a cellular level, promoting healthier, more vibrant skin. In addition to its anti-ageing effects, BBL can also target and reduce pigmentation spots and dilated capillaries, leaving your neck looking even-toned and refreshed.
2

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is a skin rejuvenation treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy. This treatment can help with neck tightening by improving skin firmness and addressing areas of loose skin, such as sagging jowls and a double chin. The combination of deep needle penetration and RF energy often yields noticeable improvements compared to traditional microneedling. Expect minimal downtime, with some redness and swelling. Typically, three treatments are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart, with gradual results as connective tissue regenerates.
3

Mirconeedling

In addition to or instead of the above treatments, you might consider Medical Microneedling to stimulate the connective tissue. This procedure uses tiny, sterile needles to create thousands of microchannels in the skin. The process prompts the skin’s natural healing response, encouraging collagen production. Microneedling is effective for preventing the development of lines or addressing very mild ones.
4

Ultraformer

The Ultraformer is another option for reducing visible signs of skin ageing. This treatment uses ultrasound (energy in the form of heat) to stimulate the connective tissue. Typically, two treatments are scheduled six weeks apart. Then it’s a waiting game, as connective tissue responds slowly. The skin might be slightly red afterwards, but you can immediately resume your activities.
5

Profhilo

Next, you might boost the connective tissue and elastin in your neck with Profhilo, an injectable based on 100% pure hyaluronic acid. Typically, three treatments are spaced a month apart. Profhilo acts as a biostimulator, encouraging your own collagen and elastin production. You can maintain the results with a few treatments per year.
6

Sculptra

If your neck displays more noticeable signs of ageing, possibly from sun exposure or the passage of time, and the quality of your elastin and connective tissue has declined, Sculptra could be a more suitable option. This powerful biostimulator typically requires 2-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The key benefit of Sculptra is its long-lasting effect, which can endure for up to 2 years.
7

CO2 laser

The CO2 laser is particularly effective for treating severely damaged skin, such as thin, wrinkled, or weathered skin. The laser treats the skin by creating thousands of tiny, targeted zones, which improves the overall texture. This process gently heats the underlying connective tissue, encouraging collagen regeneration to thicken and firm the skin. Healing in the neck area may be slower due to its movement.

This treatment is ideal for addressing excess, sagging skin, but not for cases involving significant subcutaneous fat or drooping muscles. To enhance results, a follow-up treatment with Morpheus8 may be recommended to further stimulate the connective tissue and support continued neck tightening.
